Introduction: What CMPC Candidates Need To Know About AASP CMPC Mentorships

When I have prospective CMPC candidates reach out to me for mentorship, they are usually in the process of shopping around trying to find the best fit. This is completely reasonable and a smart approach that I recommend all candidates take into consideration. There are many factors that CMPC mentees need to factor into who their mentor will be: cost, scheduling flexibility, personality match, etc. However, one of the most important attributes that a CMPC mentor needs to have is giving mentees the resources they need to know how to actually market themselves in the field of sport psychology. For this issue of the Private Practice Development series, I want to review for prospective mentees how I differentiate myself from my peers in terms of teaching marketing.

Part I. Teaching CMPC Candidates What Graduate School Won’t Through Mentorships

If you talk to almost any graduate student or professional within the field of sport psychology, they received no instruction on HOW they should market themselves in the field. There are several reasons for this. First, the majority of college professors have not had to compete in the field of sport psychology because their sole focus was on obtaining tenure at university. Students and alumni cannot fault them for this as this is NOT their specialty.

With that being said, this is a crucial aspect towards being successful in the field of sport psychology and most people largely fail to acquire success in this business because they don’t have the tools to do so. When working with me on CMPC mentorship, this will be a big point of focus in my work with you. Let me explain two areas where I really focus on teaching you the nuances of marketing in the field of sport psychology.

Part II. Teaching The Nuances Of Search Engine Optimization In Sport Psychology

There are many ways CMPCs market themselves, but if you do not have even a basic understanding of how search engine optimization (SEO) works, you will be dead in the water before you ever start. Whether you prioritize social media platforms such as TikTok, YouTube shorts, podcasts or other tools, you need to have a good strategy in place and understand WHY and HOW this strategy WILL work. When working with me I will explain to you important concepts in SEO to understand, review up to date research in SEO strategies, and I will explain to you how to utilize Google’s search engine to your advantage.

Part III. Teaching Mentees How To Craft Their Elevator Speech Through CMPC Mentorship

While graduate schools generally introduce theoretical models to students, figuring out what you want your specialty to be is another process. I believe that instead of telling mentees what they should focus on, I choose to use our sessions to explore what your interests are and how those interests may match with certain specialties. For instance you may be more into the technology side of sport psychology, which would mean that you should focus on specializing in Biofeedback and/or neurofeedback applications.

In either situation, when you choose what you want to specialize in I will help you craft your elevator speech so that you are more effective at pitching clients and prospective employers. I believe that using this approach combined with helping mentees learn about sport psychology SEO strategies, mentees will be set up for success upon receiving the CMPC! If you are an athlete reading this segment of the TRAINING REPORT, hopefully this content was helpful! I put the Training Report together because I felt like many of the discussions on issues such as the Yips/mental blocks, strength training & other subject matter on athlete performance concepts were really missing the mark on these ideas (e.g. how trauma is the direct cause of the Yips). If you are interested in learning more, make sure to subscribe below for when I put out new content on issues related to sport psychology & athlete performance!
